About these plots:

These plots are anomalies from climatology of Southern Hemisphere sea ice extent represented as Hovmoller diagrams. Climatology is based on the period 1979-2000. Monthly sea ice extent data were split into 5 degree longitude segments - 72 segments - and anomalies calculated from the 22 year monthly climatology. For example, the sea ice extent for the 0-5 degree sector during September 2007 was 47200 square kms, compared to the 22 year September average of 41500 square kms. This gives an anomaly of 5700 square kms for that sector in that month. Before being plotted the resultant anomalies are smoothed in space and time using a standard near-neighbour weighted averaging.

Units are 1000 square kms.
