A few definitions.
area: Sea ice area is similar to sea ice extent, but instead takes into account areas of open water within the sea ice boundary.
concentration: Sea ice concentration is the ratio within a given region of sea ice to the total area of the region.
extent: Sea ice extent is obtained by measuring the boundary of the sea ice edge. The boundary is usually taken as where the sea ice concentration is 15%
